Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What proportion of your revenues are spent on services to those in need?

A. According to our 2007 audited financial statements, 90 cents of every dollar of revenue went to providing services for individuals, children, and families in need. The remaining 10 cents was spent on management and fundraising. Absolutely all of the food, clothing, and other good we receive are given back to the community.

Q. What does the Sunshine Division do with the money they receive?

A. Sunshine Division maximizes donations. In 2004 we were able to turn every $1 of donated funds into $5.74 worth of products and services that are given back to the community. We achieve this thanks to generous in-kind donations, and by working with distributors to obtain the best prices for products that are not donated.

Q. What other charities does the Sunshine Division help?

A. The Sunshine Division helps over 40 other nonprofit organizations each year. We provide over $1,000,000 worth of food and products to other organizations.

Q. What makes Sunshine Division unique?

A. First, we serve people around the clock, every day of the year—thanks to our long and unique partnership with the Portland Police Bureau. In addition to what we distribute out of our North Portland warehouse, we provide each of the five police precinct stations with a steady supply of food boxes for distribution by police officials. Plus officers on the street (as well as a precinct’s front-desk personnel) can give a Sunshine Division referral card to anyone they believe needs our services, which entitles the bearer to a box of food, no questions asked.

Then there’s Threadz, our clothing store, which may well be the most accessible, well supplied, and humanitarian clothing-relief service in the city, offering clients a dignified “shopping” experience. And cops can take advantage of our Izzy’s Kids clothing program—supplied by Sunshine Division with Fred Meyer gift cards, they can take low-income kids shopping for essential, new school clothes.

Q. What geographic area does the Sunshine Division cover?

A. The Sunshine Division focuses on the City of Portland for the services we provide to individuals, women, children, and families. However, we have assisted other nonprofit agencies beyond these boundaries. There are special circumstances where we have been called upon to provide assistance, such as helping people in Vernonia after the flood of 1996.

Q. Are Sunshine Division's books audited?

A. Our financial statements are audited annually, following the end of our fiscal year on June 30. Our auditors are Hoffman, Stewart & Schmidt, P.C. You can examine our most recent audited financial statement here.
