Oregon National Guard to Honor Portland Police Bureau Sunshine Division

On Wednesday, April 17, 2013, at 10:30 a.m., the Oregon National Guard’s 2-218th Field Artillery Battalion will present the Portland Police Sunshine Division with a Certificate of Appreciation.  Battalion Commander Barella will present the award at the Sunshine Division Warehouse at 687 N. Thompson Street in Portland.

The Sunshine Division is being honored for its ongoing support of Oregon National Guard families.  The Sunshine Division supplies 60 Oregon National Guard Families with a 45-pound food box each month. Unemployment for returning Oregon Guard veterans is at or above 20% and many face underemployment and a variety of struggles to support their family due to economic challenges and career changes.

Battalion Family Readiness Coordinator Mindy Barella will be on-site as well as Officer Phil Kent to discuss the program and the challenges that many of the Guard members and their family’s face.

Since 1923, the Portland Police Bureau Sunshine Division has been providing emergency food and clothing relief to Portland families and individuals in need. Whether due to the loss of a job, domestic crime, illness, or victims of fire or disaster, the Sunshine Division has built an 89-year legacy of mobilizing quickly and efficiently to assist distressed Portlanders.
